1. Keeping life lines open in the chaos of Iwo Jima

On Feb. 19, 1945, hundreds of ships carrying 110,000 Marines converged on a tiny Pacific island south of Japan. Among the leathernecks was Wilbur R. Weaver from Cetronia, a 26-year-old communications sergeant in an artillery regiment. The 1937 graduate of South Whitehall High School was a stockman for PP&L when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor vaulted America into the war. He enlisted in the summer of '42, joined the 4th Marine Division and fought on Roi-Namur, Saipan and Tinian. Now, Iwo Jima lay before him - - 8 square miles topped by an extinct volcano, a moonscape on the murderous path to Tokyo. American planners wanted the island as a base for fighter planes and a refuge for crippled bombers. But first the Marines would have to banish its 21,000 Japanese defenders. A few thousand yards from the beach, Weaver and a dozen other men from Easy Battery, 2nd Battalion, 14th Regiment rode off their landing ship in an amphibious vehicle. The `duck` headed for the island, where the first Marines had come ashore about six hours earlier.
