Highlights
Beginnings: Nesconset was one of the last sections of Smithtown to be developed because it was heavily wooded. Even by the turn of this century, only three roads - Lake Avenue, Gibbs Pond Road and Browns Road - crossed the area named for the sachem of the Nissequogue Indians. So when Louis and Clementine Vion, French immigrants who had come to New York City in the 1890s, moved to Nesconset in 1900 , they had to fell trees to create Midwood Avenue in order to reach their property.
