  1. Oscar still plans for a big night

The tentative settlement reached this week between the Directors Guild and producers bolstered hopes that talks would resume in the writers strike, but it wasn't enough to relieve the queasy reality settling on Hollywood that the Academy Awards may go the way of the celebrity-free ratings downer that was Sunday's Golden Globes.

  9. Designs for luscious living

LEAVE it to Michael Kors, America's favorite fashion pundit on "Project Runway," to send out a collection so upbeat it had us dancing in our seats. There were no super-skinny models at this show, just Kors' thoroughbreds, their legs buffed and bronzed under incredibly short skirts, their chauffeured tootsies in crocodile platform sandals no matter the windchill. He called the collection "Sportluxe," and it was full of clothes not just to wear but to live in (if you can afford it), such as a Glen plaid anorak trimmed in sable, a snuggly ombre cashmere sweater dress and sweat pants done over in delectable cashmere.

  11. The Wearing and Tearing of Richard Tyler

Shawn Hubler is a West senior writer.
Richard Tyler pads through his Italianate dining room, Diet Coke in one hand, antibiotics in the other, a slender convalescent in a big white turtleneck. It is late morning, and he has been out of the hospital for five days. His long hair hangs in waves...

  13. Hatfield's on Beverly: Quiet ambition, riveting tastes

Cooks used to dream about opening their own little restaurant with an herb garden out back and their spouse at the door.

Cooks used to dream about opening their own little restaurant with an herb garden out back and their spouse at the door. Many of L.A.'s most beloved restaurants — places like Joe's in Venice or Josie in Santa Monica or Avenue in Manhattan Beach &#...

  15. Steep in afternoon's tastiest tradition

    Baltimore Sun Staff
Long before Americans were lining up for double lattes and no-whip cappuccinos, there was tea -- and teatime. And although New York, home of the double-espresso high, may strike one as an unlikely place for a relaxing afternoon tea, few places appreciate...

  17. 'Def Jam's How to Be a Player'

    Times Staff Writer
"Def Jam's How to Be a Player" is a rambling, shambling, good-natured comedy that tries to have fun with unbridled male sexual prowess while making sure its hero gets an obligatory comeuppance at the very last moment. However, by then we have every reason...

  19. Guy

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Wednesday December 17, 1997      "Guy" is a creepy, funny and altogether provocative meditation on the power of a film camera--and it's also almost a love story. In the title role, Vincent D'Onofrio plays a handsome, well-built 34-year-old single L.A....

    FOR THE TIMES
Friday November 7, 1997      Have you met Mr. Bean? Quiet fellow, almost mute, very British in his tweedy appearance, but chronically discombobulated in his manner. He's a man who will get his shirt caught in his zipper just before he's to meet a...

Performing, it seems, is great preparation for cooking under pressure. Dweezil Zappa and Lisa Loeb are the coolest of cooks. Neither is the least bit flummoxed that smoke rises from the roasting asparagus or that the new macaroon recipe creates what Zappa...
