  1. 'Coffee and Cigarettes'

It's a drag that "cool" has become such a useless word. Ever since advertisers appropriated the marker in the late 1960s, as the very cool social critic Thomas Frank has observed, it's been increasingly tough to stick it to the Man or at least look like you're doing some damage. The Man, after all, now just instantly absorbs gestures of cool — the intimations of rebellion, the outlaw poses and beguiling discontent — re-wraps and sells them in a multitude of colors and sizes. The road once traveled by Jack Kerouac now leads straight to the mall.

  3. Thoroughly modern tribal

    Special to The Times
Bob WEIS was trolling EBay from his 1962 Palm Springs ranch house, hunting for the African artifacts he has collected for the last 20 years, when he hit the mother lode. There, among the carved wooden stools and ceremonial figures, hand-woven textiles,...

  5. Steep in afternoon's tastiest tradition

    Baltimore Sun Staff
Long before Americans were lining up for double lattes and no-whip cappuccinos, there was tea -- and teatime. And although New York, home of the double-espresso high, may strike one as an unlikely place for a relaxing afternoon tea, few places appreciate...

  7. DeGraw channels his endless energy into live music

    Sun Pop Music Critic
Gavin DeGraw is hungry. He's walking around downtown New Orleans in the afternoon, looking for a decent spot where he can grab something. In a few hours, the singer-songwriter will be back on the road, en route to a gig in Arkansas. Right now, though,...

  9. Boys on the Side

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday February 3, 1995      By all rights "Boys on the Side" should be a howler. It has the kind of high-low concept that sounds like a parody of a post-"Thelma & Louise" bond-a-thon--and, at times, the film * plays like a parody.      Whoopi...
