3. Edward Burns returns to his roots

About halfway through writing the script for "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas" (which opens at the Wilmette Theatre next week), Edward Burns says he found himself at a crossroad. "Do I want to make the big, crazy, funny, holly-jolly Christmas Irish family movie?" he recalled when we spoke last week, "or do I want to go for something a little more grounded in the real world and a little more serious?"

  5. Holiday Guide 2012: Chris Jones' Top 10 shows for the season

Chicago has a plethora of holiday shows each and every year — and I’ll be reviewing enough of them over the next couple of weeks to put Rudolph in rehab. But based on many years of seasonal theater-going, here are 10 of our potential favorites for 2012. We’re restricting our choices to specifically seasonal fare — so no “Book of Mormon” or “War Horse.” And certainly no “50 Shades! The Musical.” It’s Christmas time.

  9. Hearty bites for cold Chicago nights

Those complaining about Chicago’s mild winter finally get their way as temperatures have dipped down enough to satisfy every polar bear at Lincoln Park Zoo. But while some may relish in the chill, the rest of us just want to hunker down in warm surroundings with chow that hits the spot.

  11. 7 new brunches at Chicago restaurants

This time of year, a good brunch goes a long way. There's the post-holiday-gift-shopping brunch. The visiting-with-relatives brunch. And of course, the brunch with out-of-town friends, during which way too many mimosas are consumed. Whatever the reason for brunching, a handful of restaurants have new options on the table.
