5. Anti-Gun Violence Ad & Spokesperson Show NYC Is Center Of Gun Control Debate

New York City has the toughest gun control laws in the country, but a new ad campaign and the organization behind it show that the effort to curb gun violence nationwide is centered here. Critics of one of the most vocal and powerful groups advocating for stronger gun laws say that its efforts miss the mark for reducing armed violence, even though the group has a very compelling spokesperson.

  15. Too Blue Performs at The Gatehouse Cafe in Southbury on August 7th

Though the name may be misleading, there's nothing "blue" about the genre-defying five-piece band Too Blue, performing at The Gatehouse Café in Southbury Aug. 7. Following the release of their new album Trouble with the Grey, that's garnered noted airtime and stellar reviews, the native Connecticut and New York band is making national news and earning quite the following in their home states. Blending bluegrass, jazz, swing and Celtic, Too Blue, made-up of Betsy Rome (guitar and vocals), Joan Harrison (banjo and vocals), Michael Sassano (mandolin), Jamie Doris (bassist), and Kalia Yeagle (fiddle) delivers an eclectic and adventurous performance filled with lush harmonies, catchy finger-pickin', and a sound that can't be pinned down.

  17. Local goat dairies aren't kidding around

Chances are you've had goat cheese. Maybe you've even called it chevre. A staple of gallery reception spreads, of beginner's level savory tarts, and of early-20-something stabs at culinary adulthood, generally speaking, goat cheese makes food nerds and newbs alike get all psyched in the fancy cheese section (next to the olives) or the dairy section (by the yogurt) or at the farmer's market or even the specialty cheese store (once they've advanced to some next-level maneuvers in the kitchen).
