9. Crime & Punishment: "If There Weren't Four Other Cops Here, I'd Beat the Shit Out of You"

According to a Pentagon report, 19,000 sexual assaults occur in the military each year. A seemingly insane Quinnipiac University professor says all those broads practically asked for it. "What do you expect to happen when women are put among men trained to be fighters?" asked Peter Cortland, an associate professor of English, in a jaw-dropping letter published in the New Haven Register. "The military is not a college liberal club. It is not intended to promote sociability." Cortland adds that we should "not imagine the women are innocent. They know why they are there — why they were put there — to seduce and degrade the military." Cortland, who unbelievably has a PhD from Syracuse and teaches at an institution of higher learning, claims "liberals are fixated on 1930s Spain and imagine the military is plotting a coup, so they want to mislead and disarm it," hence their nefarious plan to sabotage the armed forces with vaginas. Professor, we award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

  17. Eisley and Say Anything Plays Toad's Place on June 19

Texan indie rock melody makers Eisley are not even a month out from the release of their latest record Currents (it dropped on May 28). It was the first of the band's releases recorded and produced entirely on their own, and they credit that freedom with the blossoming of creativity and resulting 12 tracks to show for it. The fivesome is a true family affair, comprised of four DuPree siblings and a DuPree cousin, and the family ties extend to the tour as Eisley singer/guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis is married to Max Bemis, the mastermind of tourmates Say Anything. Supporting Eisley and Say Anything on this leg of the tour are HRVRD and Northern Faces. We won't hesitate to say this will be one of the more amazing shows 'round these parts this year.

  21. The 24th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Will Be Held This Weekend

The spelling bee is a recent topic of conversation, what with the National Spelling Bee wrapping up at the end of last month. This weekend, the Turnpike Players treat us to performances of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with a cast of local teenagers and adults, including Emily Stagg, who was featured in the 2002 documentary Spellbound after making it to the national finals. Each performance is different due to the interactive nature of this show.

  23. Badly Needed Immigration Bill Stymied

New Haven's municipal ID card program became a national model in stopping the victimization of undocumented immigrants. The General Assembly just passed a measure allowing undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses, a step that should make driving safer and less expensive — they must pass the test and get insurance — for everyone.
