1. Connecticut's Sushi Renaissance: Where to Get Great Sushi Around Hartford & New Haven

Connecticut is experiencing a Japanese renaissance. That's easy to see in greater Hartford, where a Hibachi restaurant just moved into Prospect Plaza, Umi in Blue Back Square has brought conveyor belt sushi to the region, and the line at Ichiban was practically out the door on an otherwise dead and frigid Sunday night in the West End. In New Haven, chef Ming Lau of Miso says the resurgence is a good decade old, and customers are increasingly discovering the sinfully high-end Chef Tasting service, in which a chef panders to a customer's personal tastes.

  5. Ernest Borgnine, Hamden's Favorite Son, R.I.P.

Ernest Borgnine died July 8 at the advanced age of Borgninety-five. I nearly had a chance to talk the guy a year and a half ago, when he was coming back to his home state of Connecticut for one of those celebrity anecdote-and-Q-&-A shows that older Hollywood personalities love to do. The show wasn’t going to be a mere nostalgia trip, though—Borgnine had a new picture coming out, the comedy thriller Red, which starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren. That’s a big project for a guy in his 90s, and it wasn’t even Borgnine’s final film—that would be The Man Who Shook the Hand of Vicente Fernandez, filmed last year.

  9. Dancin' Dawg Productions Holiday Benefit at Toad's Place and Aunt Chilada's in New Haven

Let's make sure not to forget those less-fortunate children who still deserve a magical holiday experience this year. On Dec. 22, you have your choice of two holiday benefit shows, raising not just money, but donations of toys for some of our local kiddos. Northbound Express is rocking Aunt Chilada's in Hamden, as part of their CD release show, and hoping to raise money/toys for the Children's Center of Hamden. A $5 donation or some new, unwrapped toys get you in. Kung Fu is hosting their annual Toys for Tots Holiday Spectacular at Toad's Place that same evening, teaming up with 24 Hour Music Project to also help fight domestic violence.

Let's hear it for seasonally appropriate band names. Brooklyn's A Great Big Pile of Leaves, who have roots here in good old Connecticut, hit The Space in Hamden on Nov. 5. The quartet are masters of straight-up sing-along indie rock. So, assuming we're all still intact now that the second annual late-October freak-storm has passed, we expect to see all your butts at the show.
