7. Crime & Punishment: Two men arrested after police heard them singing a song about their crime

Chris Powell, the political columnist/managing editor of Manchester's Journal-Inquirer, has called New Haven's policies toward undocumented immigrants "treason" and blamed issues in inner-city schools on the low "caliber of the students themselves," as the urban poor are "unproductive and troublesome and drag down everything around them." Yet Powell is in trouble for the one semi-intelligent point he's ever made. He wrote that once-again Senate candidate Linda McMahon made her fortune on "the business of violence, pornography, and general raunch," which caused said business, the WWE, to threaten the Journal-Inquirer with a libel suit. The Hartford Courant's Colin McEnroe did the pro-wrestling empire the favor of listing possible co-defendants who have also likened the WWE to porn, including McMahon's primary opponent Chris Shays, The New York Times' Gail Collins, McEnroe himself, The Daily Kos and Politico (which noted the WWE once partnered with Girls Gone Wild). Powell is finally in distinguished company.

  9. 'Maskulinity' dancers explore race, violence, sexuality and interpersonal relationships

You could call it dance, or you could say it's a "contemporary movement performance project with choreography." Either way, Maskulinity, directed by Ras Mikey C, who's the director of education for an arts and entertainment company called F.I.V.E. (an acronym for "Fore I'm A Versatile Entertainer"), brings together dancers from New Haven, South Windsor and Ansonia, and others from Brattleboro, Vt., for an exploration of race, violence, sexuality and interpersonal relationships — through dance. It's produced by Salix Productions, whose mission is to "create collaborative performances that illustrate women's experiences while inspiring change."

  13. Crime and Punishment: Groton man gets in fight, bites off opponent's ear

An NBC Connecticut-hosted primary debate of candidates running in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate got ugly when a fringe candidate, Lee Whitnum of Greenwich, called U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy "a whore … who sells his soul to AIPAC" (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee). In her multiple long-shot runs for office and self-filed lawsuits, Israel has been a focus to 51-year-old Whitnum, who the Stamford Advocate describes as "not currently employed." She is suing for the return of tax money paid by Connecticut residents that went to the Jewish state and filed a (rejected) libel suit against Gov. Dannel Malloy after he called her views "anti-Semitic." Though the "whore" comment fits into her long-standing shrill campaign style (she likened U.S. Rep. Jim Himes to a "Nazi" in 2008), Whitnum released a statement blaming her "disconnect and hostility" on being "flabbergasted" at the supposed ignorance of the other candidates.

  15. Crime & Punishment: Plainville man arrested for punching a dog

-Ansonia Police Officer John Troesser responded to reports that a roaming pit bull bit a man. He says such a dog "came charging toward [him] and was barking aggressively" and, lacking any more calm or creative solutions, shot it. One problem: It was the wrong dog. The offending pit bull was back in its owners' home by the time Troesser arrived. The slain dog (which was later euthanized) was Ice, a one-year-old rescued pit bull that resident Rachel Trapp was raising to be a therapy dog, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel news website. Trapp claims that, like in many cases of police overzealousness, race was an issue. "He was killed because of his breed and we are fed up with this injustice for the whole Pit Bull Breed!" she wrote on a "Justice for Ice" Facebook page. The police chief says Troesser acted appropriately, but Trapp (in whose yard the incident took place) says she has surveillance video showing Ice "was standing still and wagging his tail the entire time."
