5. The Best Dishes of 2012

Damn, I ate well this last year. And apparently so often, I've had to scroll through of a year's worth of photographs to unearth some gems deserving the spot-light. The photos reminded me that the best of what I cooked at home was created with fresh-picked vegetables from Sport Hill Farm in Easton, three miles down the road from my house. Likewise, of the many restaurants I checked out last year, the most memorable dishes were created by chefs who use seasonal and local ingredients. I'm very grateful to the farmers, chefs, cooks and restaurateurs.

  17. New Haven Dining Guide 2012: Shake Shack Restaurant Mastermind Danny Meyer Talks Hospitality, Burgers and New Haven

Shake Shack has gone Shack-ademic, opening its very first location next to a university — 986 Chapel St., kitty-corner to Yale’s Old Campus. Shake Shack’s Angus beef is 100 percent natural, vegetarian fed and humanely raised without hormones or antibiotics. Shake Shack’s electric use is offset through wind power and Renewable Energy Certificates. Bottles, cardboard and plastics are recycled. Cooking oil is reused to produce clean energy and kitchen food is composted.

  21. Next to Normal Performs at MTC MainStage in Stamford

Next to Normal has won multiple Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize — not bad for a play about mental illness. Diane Goodman is a mother who struggles with bipolar disorder, and the effects ripple throughout her family. When it comes to contemporary musicals, it doesn't get much more contemporary than this. Topics addressed include ethics in modern psychiatry, suburban life and grieving. And the music is pretty great too.
