1. Trying New Tricks With a Locally Made Salsa

Sarah Galluzzo really believes in the versatility of her homemade salsa. "Oh, I'll throw it in anything from coleslaw to Asian dishes," she said. The Fairfield resident likes to push the boundaries of how to use the tomato-based dip, and she posts the results on her website. Most recently, she's been toying with salsa-based dessert concoctions.

  3. Three New Exhibits on Display at Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan

New Canaan's Silvermine Arts Center is a haven for talent and high quality visual art. They've got a trio of end-of-summer shows that will help ease us into the fall, in a visually stimulating way. Robert Gregson's Full Tilt allows the viewer to rotate panels and mirrors and "play" and interact with his sculptures. The Guild Show Collective Vision incorprates the vague themes of "Double Vision", "Symbol and Reality" and "Impermanent Markers," while Silvermine, Milestone Graphics and the American Print Renaissance, 1979-1989 shows off some of the best prints produced by Connecticut's oldest printmaking workshop during the Reagan era.

  5. The Hottest, Most Brutal Hot Sauce Around

Everyone has that friend that's always talking about how spicy they like their food, annoyingly asking for their vindaloo even hotter and slathering red goop with foreign labels on everything they eat. The next time this guy shows up at your dinner table or backyard barbeque, slap some of Hoardable Hot Sauces' Cruel and Unusual Punishment on the table and wait for a reaction.

  17. The New Canaan Nature Center offers A Midsummer Night's Dream Hike on July 14

Night hikes can be filled with romance, given the right circumstances. The New Canaan Nature Center is offering a hike through their grounds this Saturday at dusk that's inspired by Shakespeare, entitled A Midsummer Night's Dream Night Hike. It's aimed at the young and the "young at heart," and will involve seeking out the prettier woodland creatures, observing fireflies and soaking up the beauty of the woods at sundown. For those more interested in the creepy-crawly side of nature, check out the Spider Soiree at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center instead.

  19. Our Picks: Summer Theater

Fairfield County has got a whole bunch of theatrical shows opening this week, all at once (in addition to Opera Comique at the Sherman Playhouse which we wrote about in the stage listings). You should probably go see them all at some point, but maybe this week you just want to pick one. There's Tartuffe at the Westport Country Playhouse, about a saintly dude who may or may not be a fraud. And there's Hair at the Brookfield Playhouse, the go-to hippie protest play if ever there was one. Brigadoon and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are both musicals that are playing outdoors, at Musicals at Richter and Waveny Park, if you'd rather soak in the starlight and hear some tunes. So many options, so little time...

  21. Should the enormous Centennial Watershed State Forest be more accessible to residents?

Connecticut's 15,300-acre Centennial Watershed State Forest centered in Fairfield County is mammoth by the region's standards and continues to rank, more than 10 years after its $90 million purchase, as the state's most expansive and costly public land deal ever.

  23. Summer Theatre of New Canaan debuts on June 15 with 'My Fair Lady'

My Fair Lady is considered by many to be the perfect musical. Derived from George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, it tells the story of a professor who tries to transform a simple Cockney girl into a proper lady. When it opened on Broadway in 1956, it won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It's got songs like "Wouldn't It Be Lovely," "The Rain in Spain" and "On the Street Where You Live." See it outdoors in New Canaan's Waveny Park starting with a preview performance on Friday, the debut show of Summer Theatre of New Canaan's mainstage season.
