3. Crime & Punishment: New Britain Police Chief Arrested For Having Sex While on the Clock Was Head of His "Professional Standards" Department

An internal investigation found that former New Britain Police Capt. Anthony Paventi often had sex while on duty — so often it's hard to imagine when he had time to do anything else. The 75-page report claims Paventi, 42, checked into a Days Inn 15 times for trysts during the course of the investigation. (He was apparently there so frequently a clerk could recognize his unmarked police car.) During all instances he was on duty, and was being paid overtime in two cases. Paventi also allegedly did the nasty in the back of his cruiser and, in one incident, on the hood of it. (The captain was ironically in charge of the NBPD's "professional standards" department.) The investigation sprang from a gender discrimination lawsuit filed by female officers that put the city of New Britain in what the Hartford Courant called a "difficult situation." As the city negotiated for Paventi's early retirement, it had to ensure he would cooperate in the defense (he and other high-ranking officers are defendants, as is the city). Ultimately, he made out with a $51,000-a-year pension and a $105,000 payout for accumulated vacation and sick time.

  5. The Hottest, Most Brutal Hot Sauce Around

Everyone has that friend that's always talking about how spicy they like their food, annoyingly asking for their vindaloo even hotter and slathering red goop with foreign labels on everything they eat. The next time this guy shows up at your dinner table or backyard barbeque, slap some of Hoardable Hot Sauces' Cruel and Unusual Punishment on the table and wait for a reaction.

  7. Crime & Punishment: Groton Man Tries To Fake His Own Death After Impregnating Mistress

Connecticut's Most Awful Landlord: Three residents of Sunwood Condominiums in Shelton were concerned about potential liability after a roofer fell to his death from the top of their building last February. Officials had twice halted the renovation because of alleged violations of safety and permit laws, reports the website CT Condo News. The three went to the offices of the company that oversees their condo complex, County Management, to get copies of some documents. They had apparently agreed to pay a hefty fee for the files ($60 per hour spent gathering the documents, which apparently took three hours, in addition to 5 cents per each Xeroxed piece of paper handed over, for a total of $195). When they finished their research, there was apparently no employee around to pay, so the residents left, assuming they'd be billed. But County Management owner Gary Knauf called police and found officers willing to charge the residents with sixth-degree larceny. ("That is what we believe," Knauf insisted, "they intended to steal from me.")

  19. Our Picks: 3 great "open air" art exhibits showing this week

En plein air literally translates to "in the open air," referring to painters who practice their craft in the great outdoors instead of in the controlled-environment of a studio. There are a few exhibits in Fairfield County galleries right now that feature such works, and with the mercury rising as of laste, we might as well do as much as we can en plein air for a while.
