3. Recipe: Coolidge cocktail

Dear SOS: Although it's no longer on the menu at the Hungry Cat in Santa Barbara, my friends from law school and I, in an unusual unanimous opinion, found the Coolidge to be the best cocktail of the summer. We know the ingredients, but we need expert...

  5. Bigmista's Barbecue: Fire it up!

The Torrance farmers market is in full bloom: pluots mottled with patches of red and green, bottles of fresh-pressed pomegranate juice, eggplants as thick as tree trunks. Weekenders huddle under canopies clutching pupusas and plates of pad Thai, the electric hum of a blues man's guitar and the distant patter of steel drums colliding in the air above. The market's meat seekers, however, are unfazed by the clamor, eyes affixed to the brisket being carved at Bigmista's Barbecue.

Brian Loring has a self-proclaimed obsession with Pinot Noir. From a workaday facility in Lompoc on the Central Coast, he makes half a dozen single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. This one, though, is a mixture of several vineyard lots and is a great argument...

  13. Can't resist those crab patties

SEATTLE chef Tom Douglas likes to recount how he moved to that hotbed of Dungeness crab in 1977 and could not find a crab cake to save his mid-Atlantic soul. He put one on his first menu, adapting a Delaware recipe to the Pacific crab, and restaurant reviewers could write about nothing else. Now he is so famous for his crab cakes that he has written an entire book about them.

  19. Metallica reigns supreme at the Weenie Roast

The fans in the audience at the KROQ Weenie Roast on Saturday weren't the only ones looking forward to the headliners. Band after band, from Pennywise to Rise Against to the Offspring, took a moment to express their feelings of awe at warming the stage for a force as mighty as Metallica, whose name was usually preceded by an expletive indicating just how much awe was involved.
