1. Lynyrd Skynyrd Not Dropping Confederate Flag

<span style="font-size: small;">Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington says they're not dropping the Confederate flag despite reports that they were. Gary claims he was misunderstood and that he just meant he wished people didn't use it as a symbol of hate. The confusion started in a recent interview with CNN when Gary said, "Through the years, people like the KKK and skinheads kinda kidnapped the Dixie or Rebel flag from the Southern tradition and the heritage of the soldiers . . . that's what it was about. We didn't want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things." That statement led to talk that Lynyrd Skynyrd planned to stop using the flag completely, but that's not what he meant.

  9. Maurice Merlin paintings and prints on display at Huntington Library

We've heard lately that America is trying to rise up from "the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression." While economists, political scientists and historians will debate that point, an exhibition of paintings and prints by Maurice Merlin at the Huntington Library's Scott Gallery provides a yardstick against which to measure our present stagnation.

  17. Interview: Michael Pena's adjusting to the view from up there

Michael Pena wanted to sit closer to the floor-to-ceiling windows at NoMI during a recent lunch — and who wouldn't? The trendy restaurant on the seventh floor of the Park Hyatt hotel offers customers a scenic view of Michigan Avenue and the Water Tower building, and in the case of Pena, who shares top billing with Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming film "End of Watch," a far different view from the one he was used to growing up in Chicago.

  19. Beverly: A little town in the city to put down roots

Inside the Top Notch Beefburgers diner on 95th Street, things haven't changed much for decades. Owner Diran "Speedy" Soulian no longer flips hamburgers with the verve that earned him his nickname, but at age 80 he still runs the show. He still makes the burgers and French fries from scratch. (Note the unbutchered hind quarter in the cooler and the boxes of potatoes awaiting peeling.) Chicago's finest still watch over the lunch crowd from their table in the center. And, the sign on the front door still says "Cash Only."
