  7. Hike, bike and eat your fill of clams on Block Island

I am standing atop Clay Head, a 70-foot-high bluff, looking over miles and miles of open ocean on a clear summer morning. Back home in St. Louis, my wife, Nancy, and I had told a friend that we were heading for three days on this glorious island.

  9. Driving tour through Washington County history

Nearly every community in Washington County has monuments and memorials honoring its war veterans. Some are well-known. Some are rarely noticed. All are worthy of visiting. In addition, the county contains many war-related structures and monuments. This tour includes some of those. Mainly, the tour features distinctive or less-well-known monuments. The tour is about 80 miles long. It takes about two and a half hours to drive. Add another hour or two to get out and walk around or to take a break.
