  5. Growing gratitude

The trowels and shovels have been cleaned and stowed, and the summer garden is now just a memory. In this quiet time of autumn, with Thanksgiving about to usher in the winter holidays, we asked gardeners, plant breeders, horticulturists and designers to reflect on what they are thankful for when it comes to gardens and gardening.

  11. Crowning glory: Denise Ruch's Villa Park garden, the 2003 Glorious Gardens Overall Winner

Anyone gardening in the Midwest has to be gutsy, a glutton for punishment -- or both. We're not like those gardeners in Oregon and Washington. You know the ones, pictured on the glossy spreads of just about every gardening magazine where they show off their 12-foot-tall climbing roses, lupines and blue poppies, or borders of deutzia, daphne and kalmias. Those poor souls who must toil against timely gentle rainfalls and rich, fluffy soil that resembles chocolate cake mix, and mild temperatures that hardly ever drop near freezing.
    Special to the Tribune

  13. Sharing plants, safely

Many plants are easy to share -- maybe too easy. A friend may have mint, lily-of-the-valley or violets to spare because they are aggressive spreaders. Such plants can cause headaches and backaches unless you place them where they can't crowd out...

  15. Let your wildflower appreciation bloom

    Happy Earth Day, everybody.
Happy Earth Day, everybody. Today is the 40th annual love-your-planet observation, and not to get all baby boomer nostalgic on you, but I worked the first one. OK, it's not Woodstock, but surely I should get some tree-hugger street cred for staffing a...

    Tree Tips:
    Staff reporter

  23. Up where he belongs

    Tribune reporter
Like a lot of boys growing up during the space race, John Grunsfeld was fascinated by astronauts. But even then, as a 7-year-old back in 1965, the lengths to which Grunsfeld pursued his dream of space travel set him apart. There was the canister vacuum...
