  1. Don Welsh focuses boundless energy on promoting Chicago

Here you will find the DePaul Art Museum, an institution so humble that only "Art Museum" is spelled across its modest facade. The admission is free, though the lessons offered in its first gallery, at least through June 16, feel priceless.

  7. When the sun, and mayor, pop up for the arts

Each and every year in Chicago, there is a moment when the problems of the city seem to fall away and everything seems doable and winnable again. It is a moment inextricably tied to the weather. Spring always comes later than even the worst-case scenario. 21. Pritzker Military Library offers oral histories, speakers

The wide windows in the landmark Monroe Building offer a sweeping view of Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park. On a crystal-blue spring day, it's easy to temporarily forget the long, bloody history of warfare. But keeping the stories of "citizen soldiers" around the globe alive for future generations is central to the Pritzker Military Library's mission.
