1. Glorious sounds soar above season of economic gloom

No musical news story in 2012 drew greater media attention, inside and outside Chicago, than the strike that silenced the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for 48 hours in late September. The cliffhanger was resolved just in time for the CSO to fulfill a scheduled tour.

“Man of Steel” isn’t scheduled to hit theaters until June 14, 2013, but the city of Plano doesn’t want to wait that long to capitalize on the Superman reboot that filmed last August in the Western suburb’s downtown area.

11. Celebs who are coming to Lollapalooza, Cee Lo performing at Hard Rock, Joe Jonas hangs out at Studio Paris

It’s hard to predict all of the celebrities who will attend Lollapalooza this year. Unlike a major sporting event in Chicago, the stars in the Lollapalooza crowd aren’t just actors, musicians and athletes with local ties. They’re often from all over the country and can be completely random (like “Superbad” actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse and “Twilight” actor Kellan Lutz last year). We do, however, know a few of the big names who will be taking in the Lollapalooza festivities, either because they're making appearances in the city or tweeted about it.

13. Lollapalooza weekend filled with stars, swag and shoutouts

Before Zach Gilford and his fiancee, Kiele Sanchez, went to check out the gift suites in the Hard Rock Hotel on Saturday, the self-deprecating “Friday Night Lights” star and Evanston native, who is currently filming Fox's “The Mob Doctor” in Chicago, politely excused himself from our conversation in the hotel's It's So Miami Oasis.

15. Informal poles: Totems add flair to Lolla fest

People wave things over their heads at concerts. Especially during weekend music festivals. Lollapalooza, for instance. Cigarette lighters, cell phones, hands, of course. That forked, heavy metal hand salute, for sure. And the rain on Saturday brought out umbrellas, as you’d guess (though fewer than you’d expect).

21. Yearly picnic thrilled thousands of kids

Chicago Tribune reporter
At a time when automobiles were rare but orphans were plentiful, a tradition began in Chicago to bring them together. The idea was simple: Why shouldn't a needy kid get to enjoy an automobile ride and fun picnic in the park? In 1904, five children from a...
