  1. Gun Debate Shouldn't Stall Coltsville Park Effort

That Connecticut's congressional delegation is battling for gun safety legislation while trying to have a historic gun manufactory designated a National Historic Park is a perhaps unfortunate coincidence — but nothing more than that.

  7. Hooked on trout

From my view knee deep in the river, real food looked like this: A swift current charged down Utah's Weber, and beyond the stream bright yellow alfalfa, and beyond that a reservoir holding sun-stunned water from the immense snowmelt two seasons ago. It was a blue-ribbon stream, three thousand brown trout per river mile. A teasing impression of plenty.

  11. Should Coltsville be a National Park?

For a dozen years, U.S. Rep. John Larson and other officials have tirelessly promoted the notion of turning Coltsville, the former industrial village in Hartford’s South Meadows, into a National Historic Park. Millions of dollars have been invested by public and private sources to make the complex a mix of businesses and residences as well as a national park, somewhat like the Lowell Mills in Lowell, Mass. Then came the horrific killings of 20 children and  six female educators in Newtown on Dec. 14. Should the massacre stop the park proposal in its tracks? Some say it should, that it’s just the wrong time to pay homage to guns. Others say it shouldn’t, that the point of the project is place the factory in its historical context, as is done with famous plantations were slaves were kept, and to help revive Hartford.
