  3. Ring in the New Year With Fireworks, Music and Comedy at First Night Hartford

There's almost an embarrassment of riches facing New Year's Eve revelers in the Hartford area this year: ice skating, carousel rides, street performers (pictured) and horse-drawn carriage rides at Bushnell Park; puppets, poetry and improvisational comedy at Center House Church; robots at Hartford Public Library, Japanese drummers at the Old State House; and various musicians, from steel bands to jazz to klezmer, on and on all around town. Head to the Grand Procession, which begins at Hartford City Hall at 5:25 p.m. and works its way to the Bushnell Park fireworks viewing area on Trinity Street. There'll be two fireworks displays in Bushnell Park at the Trinity Street Area beginning at 6 p.m. (Bring your 3D fireworks glasses.) What a great way to ring in the new year, with our friends and neighbors, in the city we all love.

  7. ING Hartford Marathon: It's pretty darn cold, but otherwise perfect for the Marathon

It's marathon day and the ING Hartford Marathon is set to go off at 8 a.m.   It was a record 27 degrees this morning. It feels more like Manchester Road Race morning than Hartford Marathon morning but hey, better chilly than hot in October.  ...

  9. Turns Out, There Is More To The Campaigns Than Attack Ads

In a surprising development, Chris Murphy and Linda McMahon are now fighting over something that actually matters.

In a surprising development, Chris Murphy and Linda McMahon are now fighting over something that actually matters. Thankfully, the two candidates for U.S. Senate are now bickering over Medicare. The conversation is nasty and full of allegations -- but...

  11. The City's Ultimate Bad Call

A few times a week, The Husband steps away from his 12th floor office and plays Ultimate Frisbee in Bushnell Park. It’s hard to find a downside: He gets some serious exercise, he breathes actual fresh air, he has fun with a bunch of people he’...

  13. 9/20/2012-No Fun Town

The city of Hartford has had its head up its rule book for a long time. I've never seen or heard of a city more averse to spontaneous fun. Thirty years ago, street corner musicians weren't allowed to play on the street corners. Twenty years ago, the fiddle contest grew popular enough that the city of Hartford moved them out of Bushnell Park and over to Siberia Park. That effectively killed the contest.

  15. Knowing History Makes People Feel At Home Here

    The Hartford Courant
Despite a surge of initiatives from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, the state's economy continues to suffer. So let me throw out another economic development idea — how about if we require the teaching of Connecticut history in our schools? I've heard a...

  23. Plenty Of Travelers Hitting The Road This Week

While there are some historians who argue we should celebrate Independence Day on July 2, rather than on the fourth, holiday travelers probably give little thought to the issue. "The fourth is the fourth," they'll say, despite the fact that the Second...
