1. Texans' Williams should be Bears' top free-agent target

A little more than a month after the Bears professed to be re-emphasizing the draft, they likely are about to make it rain in free agency.
A little more than a month after the Bears professed to be re-emphasizing the draft, they likely are about to make it rain in free agency. But that's good because this is an unusual year in free agency. Typically, the market mostly offers players who are...

3. Bears acquire Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall

Almost three years ago, the Chicago Bears traded for Jay Cutler after years of unsuccessfully trying to develop their own quarterback. Now, they’ve traded for the wide receiver he worked so well with in Denver.

5. Game 14: Ravens embarrassed by Chargers in 34-14 loss

Before the opening kickoff Sunday night, the Ravens knew that the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets had both lost earlier in the day, meaning that for a franchise-record fourth consecutive year, the Ravens were going to the playoffs.

7. Looking back at the Ravens' best free-agent signings

The Ravens aren’t expected to take a cannonball dive into the talent pool when free agency begins Tuesday at 4 p.m. So here are my condolences in advance if you purchased a custom-made, purple Vincent Jackson or Mario Williams jersey in anticipation of the Ravens signing one of those stars this offseason.

9. Bears expect major upgrade from Marshall

Not long after the Bears acquired Jay Cutler three years ago, he began lobbying the front office for a wide receiver.

11. Bears' Emery makes statement

I doubt anybody describes Bears general manager Phil Emery as dull today.
I doubt anybody describes Bears general manager Phil Emery as dull today. This is how a new GM gets his point across clearly, by pulling off the type of trade that drops jaws and potentially changes the balance of power in the NFC. This is when you can...

13. Bears were willing to gamble

Rasheedah Watley has known Brandon Marshall since he was 12 and laughed when I asked her Wednesday if the Bears can change Marshall in ways the Broncos or Dolphins couldn't. "It's very foolish to think that,'' said Watley, Marshall's high school...

15. Ravens free agency by the numbers

Maybe it’s because I was a star mathlete in high school, but I love numbers. And we’ve spent plenty of time crunching them these past 10 days while waiting for the Ravens to make moves -- or purposefully not make moves -- in the new league year. Here is a handful of relevant numbers from this quiet free-agency period:

19. Bears can't afford a luxury

For a team whose makeshift offense begs for a makeover, the Bears signing free-agent defensive end Mario Williams would be like a guy buying a big-screen plasma TV to watch from the futon in his studio apartment.

21. The quiet buzz before the NFL free agency storm

Today’s start of the NFL’s free agency period will bring hype, hope and anticipation to many football cities across the country. But in Baltimore, fans will start to hold their breath at 4 p.m. as they wait to see if Ben Grubbs finds a better deal elsewhere than the one the Ravens have offered him to remain here, and they will be crossing their fingers that their pricy, purple Jarret Johnson jersey won’t become obsolete by day’s end.

23. Ravens news, notes and opinions

This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs. The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye, has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation.
