  1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

Rookies <strong><span class=&quot;runtimeTopic">Courtney Upshaw</span></strong> and <strong><span class="runtimeTopic">Bernard Pierce</span></strong>, and veterans like <strong><span class="runtimeTopic">Matt Birk</span></strong> and <strong><span class="runtimeTopic">Ray Lewis</span></strong> are all expected to make their 2012 preseason debuts tonight against the <span class="runtimeTopic">Detroit Lions</span>. But the guy who may be under the microscope the most -- assuming he plays -- is <strong><span class="runtimeTopic">Jimmy Smith</span></strong>. The second-year cornerback appeared to have his back lock up on him late in Wednesday&rsquo;s practice, forcing him to exit. He missed last week&rsquo;s preseason opener, and four or five days of practice time, with back spasms. Earlier in camp, he exited one practice after straining his shoulder, and another after cramping up. Smith, a first-round pick last year, came to camp in great shape and looking extremely motivated to push <strong><span class="runtimeTopic">Cary Williams</span></strong> for his starting cornerback job. He spent a lot of time in the offseason at the <span class="runtimeTopic">Ravens</span>&rsquo; facility and in the weight room, and team officials raved about his work ethic and commitment. So it has to be disappointing that the injuries have cropped up in training camp, especially after he essentially missed four games last season with a high <span class="runtimeTopic">ankle sprain</span>. Whether he starts or not, the Ravens are going to need him on the field with all of the top quarterbacks and pass-happy teams that they play.

  3. Ravens have plenty of choices at wide receiver

One has been the talk of training camp with his acrobatic catches. Another towers over Ravens defensive backs in practice. One literally turned heads with his speed during spring workouts. And another is just trying to stay healthy long enough to work consistently with quarterback Joe Flacco.

  9. Ravens training camp highlights: Thursday practice

<strong>FIRST TOUCHDOWN </strong>The first touchdown of training camp wasn&rsquo;t registered by the offense, but the defense. Cornerback Lardarius Webb stepped in front of a Joe Flacco pass intended for wide receiver Anquan Boldin on the third play of full-team drills and returned the interception at least 30 yards to the end zone.

  11. Deonte Thompson working to make impression with coaches

As if there weren’t enough obstacles facing an undrafted rookie in the NFL, wide receiver Deonte Thompson knows his every move is being observed by Ravens coaches. That can cut both ways depending on how the University of Florida product fares in...

  13. Taking a closer look at Flacco's accuracy in 2011

Joe Flacco&rsquo;s accuracy was scrutinized throughout the 2011 season, from his 15-for-32 passing performance in a Week 2 loss to the Tennessee Titans to the AFC divisional round win over the <a class=&quot;runtimeTopic" href="#" data-topic-id="ORSPT000043">Houston Texans,</a> in which Flacco connected with receivers on just 14 of his 27 attempts. His 57.6 completion percentage was a career-low and also the first time it had dipped below 60 percent.

  15. Ravens' news, notes and opinions after Week One of training camp

Ravens left tackle <strong>Bryant McKinnie </strong>is in town and will be at the Under Armour Performance Center today, but it&rsquo;s still too early to assume that he will regain his starting left tackle spot. That is because the Ravens have to find out whether he&rsquo;s healthy enough and in good enough condition to get out on the field. Remember, that was the issue with McKinnie all along before the big left tackle&rsquo;s absence prompted all sorts of theories about why he didn&rsquo;t report for training camp. And now, not only will he have to pass the conditioning test and show team officials that he&rsquo;s in good enough shape, he&rsquo;s also going to have to prove his back is healthy. McKinnie told reporters the past few days that he hurt his back in an accident at home, and that&rsquo;s why he didn&rsquo;t show up for the first full-team workout last week.

  17. Undrafted wide receiver Deonte Thompson showing flashes at Ravens training camp

Wide receiver Deonte Thompson, an undrafted rookie from Florida, turned heads during offseason workouts by blazing past defenders for a few long touchdown passes. Early in training camp, the 23-year-old speedster has been running routes with fellow wide receivers Tandon Doss and LaQuan Williams on the second unit.

  19. Ravens camp notes: Pierce misses Tuesday practice due to hamstring

The Ravens just wrapped up another padded training camp practice at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills, and head coach John Harbaugh had nothing new to report on offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie, who has not been cleared to practice, and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who has a hamstring injury.

  21. Corey Graham not shocked by his play thus far

One of the more pleasant surprises of Ravens training camp thus far has been the play of cornerback Corey Graham. Signed to a two-year deal by the organization in March after he turned last season into a Pro Bowl campaign as a special-teams ace, the former Chicago Bear has impressed the coaching staff enough to join rookie Asa Jackson as the next tandem of cornerbacks after Lardarius Webb, Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith.
