5. Ravens practice highlights: Defense bounces back with big hits

DEFENSE PITCHES SHUTOUT: After surrendering two touchdowns in Thursday night's 31-17 preseason win against the Atlanta Falcons, the first-team defense shined Saturday. During a red-zone exercise, the unit prevented the first-team offense from scoring and permitted just one first down. Cornerback Lardarius Webb intercepted a pass from quarterback Joe Flacco intended for wide receiver Anquan Boldin in the end zone.

  9. Ravens practice highlights: Sacks aplenty in Annapolis

SACKS GALORE The defense's ability to apply pressure got off to a modest start when defensive end Pernell McPhee tagged quarterback Joe Flacco. But the pass rush really ramped up during a two-minute exercise during which backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor was whistled down five times in six plays. The other play resulted in a Hail Mary from Taylor to rookie wide receiver Tommy Streeter getting deflected by strong safety Sean Considine and intercepted by inside linebacker Jameel McClain.

  11. Ravens camp highlights, Webb continues interception streak

USING THEIR HANDS The secondary was particularly active in getting a hand on passes. Cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Chykie Brown deflected two passes each, and outside linebacker Sergio Kindle tipped a Tyrod Taylor pass intended for rookie wide receiver Dorian Graham in the end zone. At one point, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron yelled at the offensive players on the sideline, “They’re reaching for the ball, and we’re not! Reach for the ball!”

  15. Game 2: Ravens fall flat in 26-13 loss to Titans

Joe Flacco rolled to his right and found no open receiver, so he turned around and ran back to the left. With no better options visible there, Flacco pivoted and finally threw the ball away just before being leveled by Tennessee Titans defensive end Derrick Morgan.

  17. Ravens news, notes and opinions

The two names you read here and pretty much everywhere else in the days leading up to the draft as it related to the Ravens and their original 29th overall pick were Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower and Wisconsin center Peter Konz. As it turns out, neither was as high on the Ravens’ draft board as we all thought. In a live chat yesterday on the Ravens’ team website, <a href="http://www.baltimoreravens.com/" target="_blank">www.baltimoreravens.com, director of player personnel Eric DeCosta said that the team had about seven players that it really liked in the first round and Hightower was “not one of the players that we would have traded to get.” Again, that doesn’t mean that the Ravens weren’t interested in Hightower, but it does make it pretty clear that they liked several other players better. As for Konz, DeCosta said that that they think he’s going to be a very good player, but they had other players, including Courtney Upshaw, rated higher. My take on it is if the Ravens really liked Konz as much as we thought they did, they would have been willing to trade up five or six spots in the second round to make sure they got him. They did it for running back Bernard Pierce in the third round, even though that didn’t cost as much as it would have to move up and grab Konz. Instead, the Atlanta Falcons selected Konz with the 23rd pick in the second round, and five picks later, the Ravens took Iowa State guard Kelechi Osemele. I guess the moral of the story is don’t believe everything you hear around draft time. Teams, especially ones that take the draft as seriously as the Ravens do, simply aren’t going to expose their hand until it’s absolutely necessary.

  19. Asa Jackson eager to learn from Ray Lewis, Ed Reed

As of Sunday, it still hadn’t quite set in to Ravens rookie cornerback Asa Jackson that he was practicing on an NFL football field. “I’m working toward getting in that mindset every day,” he said of making the transition to the professional ranks. But Jackson, a fifth-round draft pick out of Cal Poly, showed up with the right attitude.

The Ravens may lack experience at the wide receiver position, but they certainly don’t lack depth. How much quality exists within that depth remains to be seen.
