9. Ravens news and notes after second OTA

I feel like I have to preface every one of these post-OTA observation blogs by offering the reminder that drawing any conclusions from these workouts would be foolish on my part. Still, some players clearly make a bigger impression than others and I can say without hesitation that nobody stood out more in yesterday’s session than second-year wide receiver LaQuan Williams. First of all, conditioning was not the issue for him, but Williams looks even leaner and much more explosive than he did during his rookie season. And during drills, Williams showed great speed and tremendous hands, even making a one-handed catch in traffic at one point on a Joe Flacco pass. Williams also beat Lardarius Webb on a couple of occasions along the sideline. With 12 receivers on the Ravens’ roster and the addition of several accomplished special teams players, Williams likely faces another uphill battle to make the team. But something tells me that’s just the way he wants it and he’s more than up for the challenge.

11. Ravens would like to add a veteran guard, but options are mostly underwhelming

The Ravens have said on several occasions that they plan to give second-year tackle Jah Reid every opportunity to win the left guard job and replace Pro Bowl performer Ben Grubbs. They have a history of giving younger players opportunities, so there is no reason to think that is lip service. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t also bring in a veteran to compete for the job and serve as insurance. That remains very much in the team’s plans, and they have spoken to several agents of guards to discuss potential fits. However, the Ravens don’t have a whole lot of money to spend and there are not a whole lot of quality options at their disposal. Below is a look at 10 guards that they have considered:

13. Ravens remain patient as guards continue to leave market

The Ravens have said all along that they would be patient in free agency and not panic to fill any perceived holes.
The Ravens have said all along that they would be patient in free agency and not panic to fill any perceived holes. They've been true to their word. When left guard Ben Grubbs opted to sign with the New Orleans Saints about 48 hours into free agency,...

15. Ravens bring back veteran Matt Birk on three-year deal

As the Ravens await word on whether free agent left guard Evan Mathis will accept their multi-year offer, they addressed one spot on their offensive line Friday, agreeing in principle to a three-year deal with veteran center Matt Birk that is pending a physical.

17. Preston: Ravens would really feel loss of McClain

The Ravens have lost three starters in free agency, but it's nothing to have major concerns about. Now, if they lose inside linebacker Jameel McClain, it might be time to get a little nervous.

21. 2012 NFL free agency primer: the offensive linemen

The Ravens would like to improve their offensive line during the offseason, but the best move they could make in free agency would be re-signing Ben Grubbs, who could soon be one of the top guards available. The Ravens recently said that they have already offered big money to Grubbs -- and there’s no reason not to believe that claim -- but if Grubbs, who turns 28 this month, hits the open market, he could be gone for good.

23. Ravens news, notes and opinions

This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs. The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye, has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation.
