Revolution and Barnstormers Players in Atlantic League All-Star Game
![The Atlantic League Board of Directors has announced its All-Star selections to comprise the rosters of the Freedom Division and Liberty Division teams, as 22 players from each division prepare to go head-to-head in the league's annual mid-summer classic. The selections were made based on fan voting, as well as media votes and manager votes from each of the league's eight teams. The 2011 Atlantic League All-Star Game will be played this Wednesday, July 13, at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York, Pa., home of the defending Atlantic League champion York Revolution.
The Freedom Division All-Star Team will be managed by York manager Andy Etchebarren, while the Liberty Division's club will be managed by Bridgeport Bluefish manager Willie Upshaw. Both managers guided their clubs to last year's Atlantic League Championship Series.
Etchebarren's Freedom Division squad includes seven representatives from the Revolution, with pitchers Corey Thurman and Matt DeSalvo, catcher Octavio Martinez, shortstop Eric Eymann, infielder Vince Harrison, and outfielders Val Majewski and James Shanks all selected. Thurman currently ranks sixth in the league with a 3.82 ERA through 13 starts. DeSalvo leads the league in innings pitched (87.2) and strikeouts (82). Harrison ranks third in the league in batting with a .338 average, and Majewski leads the league with 52 runs scored.
The Freedom Division All-Star roster also includes four Lancaster Barnstormers, with pitchers Ross Peeples and Justin Segal, first baseman Tommy Everidge and infielder Gilberto Mejia all selected. Everidge is the league's homerun leader with 13.
Six members of the Somerset Patriots have been named to the roster, with third baseman Jeff Nettles, outfielders Michael Hernandez and Joe Holden, designated hitter Josh Pressley and pitchers Derrick Gordon and Andrew Dobies all selected. Nettles is the league's career leader in RBI, and is leading the circuit again this season with 46 runs batted in.
The Road Warriors will also send five representatives to the All-Star Game, with catcher Josh Johnson, first baseman Carlos Sosa, second baseman Amadeo Zazueta and pitchers Miguel Martinez and Adam Thomas all heading to York. Sosa is tied for third in the league in homeruns with 11, while Martinez ranks third in ERA at 3.53.
That group will square off against the Liberty Division All-Stars, a team that includes seven members of the Long Island Ducks, who clinched the Liberty Division's first half championship and a playoff berth with a victory on Monday. Catcher J.R. House, infielder Javier Colina, outfielders Kraig Binick, Matt Esquivel and John Rodriguez and pitchers Mike Loree and Mike Parisi will all return to York for the Atlantic League All-Star Game, the site where they clinched their first half title earlier in the week. Binick is the league's second-leading hitter with a .364 average, while pacing the circuit with 21 stolen bases. Loree has been the league's top pitcher throughout the first half with a 10-1 record, four more wins than any other pitcher, and the top ERA in the league at 1.71.
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will send five players to the All-Star Game, as first baseman Ben Harrison, second baseman Brandon Pinckney, shortstop Yunesky Sanchez and pitchers Michael Schlact and Nick Green have all been tabbed. Sanchez leads the league in hitting with a .402 batting average.
Upshaw will manage five members of his Bridgeport Bluefish on the Liberty Division's All-Star team, with outfielder Danny Putnam, third baseman Luis Lopez, designated hitter Wes Bankston and pitchers Matt Pike and Pat Ryan all joining him in York. Bankston ranks second in the league with 30 extra-base hits, and third in slugging percentage at .574.
The rosters are subject to change, based on potential personal conflicts, player injuries or other factors.
Five members of the Camden Riversharks complete the roster, as catcher Toby Hall, infielder Lloyd Turner, outfielder Noah Hall, and pitchers Jay Marshall and John Bale have all received the honor. Marshall and Bale have been two of the top relievers in the league this season, owning ERAs of 1.59 and 1.93, respectively.
Hosting the Atlantic League All-Star Game is a first for Sovereign Bank Stadium and the city of York. Wednesday's events kick off with the Stauffer's All-Star Family Fun Festival on the Brooks Robinson Plaza in front of Sovereign Bank Stadium from 3 until 5 p.m., an event that is free to the public. The festival includes music, fun animals with the Zoo Mobile from the Maryland Zoo, free face painting, the Best Buy Video Game Nook and an Autograph Session with the Atlantic League All-Stars.
Gates open at 5 p.m. as fans will be greeted with a WellSpan Health All-Star Drawstring Backpack Giveaway (first 1,500 fans) . At 5:15 p.m., teams comprised of an Atlantic League hitter, one local men's league player, and one high school senior athlete competing for scholarship money will get together to take aim at the tallest wall in all of professional baseball, Sovereign Bank Stadium's 37-foot, 8 inch high left field wall, the "Arch Nemesis", in the AAA Home Run Derby.
During the game itself, the ZOOperstars and Breakin' BBoy McCoy, two of the most popular national acts in minor league baseball will perform between innings, as will the famous Washington Nationals Racing Presidents.
The night will conclude with the biggest, brightest, and most spectacular fireworks show ever in the history of Sovereign Bank Stadium, a show planned twice as big as anything the stadium has ever had before, to properly finish off the best event of the summer in unforgettable fashion. The post-game fireworks are presented by AAA.
