  5. Earl Weaver's chance at revenge with Billy Martin

When I was putting together <a href=&quot;http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bs-sp-orioles-earl-weaver-reaction-0120-20130119,0,5152968.story" target="_blank">my story on Earl Weaver</a> after his death Friday night I knew I wanted to talk to Jim Henneman, the former Sun baseball beat writer and current Orioles official scorer who is our unofficial beat historian. All of us Sun writers look up to Henny and love hearing the stories of the Orioles&rsquo; glory days.

  7. Weaver's relationship with Palmer had its friction, but plenty of respect

For all the years that they did battle in the clubhouse or the sports pages or on the dais of some charity roast, Jim Palmer knew how <a href=&quot;/bal-earlweaver,0,1262021.storygallery"></a>Earl Weaver</runtime:link> really felt about him. That's why he had to hold back tears Saturday when he related his favorite memory of the Earl of Baltimore &mdash; a memory made more poignant because it also involved his late teammate Mike Flanagan.

When the playoff microscope gets rolled out next week and experts begin to dissect the Orioles &mdash; assuming they hold on to at least an American League wild-card spot &mdash; one of the primary criticisms is going to be the club's overall lack of postseason experience.

  13. Some random Orioles thoughts (Flanagan, Ripken, Mussina, Dauer, Flaherty, Marin)

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Mike Flanagan at his home in Monkton. He would be 60 years old. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Suicide is an exceptionally difficult issue for survivors to deal with. From my personal experience, that first-year anniversary is a real difficult day. I wouldn&rsquo;t be surprised if the Orioles have a moment of silence in honor of Flanny&rsquo;s memory tonight.

  15. Death of Mike Flanagan, Orioles great, leaves shadows of doubt

&quot;Did you ever notice Mike when he came off the mound after a good inning?" asks Alex Flanagan, widow of the Orioles Hall-of-Famer who committed suicide a year ago. "He always had his head down."

  17. Flanagan story a warning about the risks of depression

  19. A fixture on the mound and in the booth, Palmer to become a permanent part of Camden Yards on Saturday

Four years into his major league career, Jim Palmer had gone from being a 19-year-old phenom to a World Series hero who outpitched Sandy Koufax before his 21st birthday to a sore-armed 23-year old trying to figure out a suddenly clouded future.

"There is no guarantee that when a middle-aged man enters the dark forest where the black dog is waiting, he will come out healed. It is possible to be broken there beyond hope of repair." -- Howell Raines, from "Fly Fishing Through The Midlife Crisis"...
