  1. ESPN promotes South Dakota tourism or something

    Watchdog
ESPN's latest "Mt. Rushmore of Sports" release doesn't make much more sense to me than the last one. It appears Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Joe Namath and Manhasset's own Jim Brown will represent New York in this feature. I'm not......

    Watchdog
We lost to Pennsylvania again! New York finished fourth in the final voting for ESPN's "Mt. Rushmore of Sports" feature, which was won by Illinois (Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks, Mike Ditka) with 28.6 percent of the vote. Pennsylvania......

  5. Still searching for signs of a miracle

After Todd Walker received a handmade sign in the mail on Monday that read "Dear Cubs, Please Don't Lose," a clubhouse attendant taped it on the clubhouse bulletin board next to the day's starting lineup.

  7. Chicago's Picasso sculpture

Just after noon, Mayor Richard J. Daley pulled a cord attached to 1,200 square feet of blue-green fabric, unwrapping a gift "to the people of Chicago" from an artist who had never visited--and had shown no previous interest in--the city. The artist was Pablo Picasso, who at age 85 had dominated Western art for more than half a century. He had been approached by William E. Hartmann, senior partner of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, one of the architectural firms collaborating on Chicago's new Civic Center; Hartmann wanted a sculpture for the plaza bordered by Washington, Randolph, Dearborn and Clark Streets.

  11. The 1969 Cubs

For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: `It might have been! --J ohn Greenleaf Whittier (1856). Those words were lamentably appropriate for the Chicago Cubs on this painful day, when the team's legendary futility reached a record low. Barely three weeks after holding a four-game lead over the New York Mets, the Cubs found themselves mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The hated Mets had clinched the National League East Division title.

  15. Coliseum left a lasting impression

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
To my youthful eyes, the Coliseum, with its dull gray exterior and looming presence, didn't seem to offer much in the way of enjoyment when I first saw it on a sunny, summer day in 1958. That quickly changed as my father led me up stairs that seemed to...

  17. Ask Sam Smith

Well, was looking pretty good about 9 p.m. Tuesday. So anyone like Tyrus Thomas? No, it's not over yet, but this first round in six thing is getting old. Let's see what Miami has if they have to play a seventh. What the Bulls have done is show the NBA...

  19. Dreary day on all counts

Ernie Banks was at Wrigley Field on Friday, but his trademark "Let's play two today" would have been a bad joke.
    Tribune staff reporter
Ernie Banks was at Wrigley Field on Friday, but his trademark "Let's play two today" would have been a bad joke. The Cubs are having a hard enough time getting through one, as they proved with a 3½-hour, sleep-inducing, boo-producing 10-5 loss to the...

  23. Cubs clinch NL Central title

When it was all over, when the Cubs finally knew they would be playing baseball into October, a clubhouse explosion was the order of the day.
    Tribune staff reporter
When it was all over, when the Cubs finally knew they would be playing baseball into October, a clubhouse explosion was the order of the day. It wasn't the kind of blast that provided the city with a dose of shock therapy back in June, but instead was...
