  11. Understanding Hate: Images of American racism at The Mark Twain House in Hartford

The disturbing and inflammatory imagery of American racism takes center stage at the Mark Twain House, starting with "Hateful Things," one of several planned exhibitions, films, lectures and plays continuing through the summer. The exhibit showcases artifacts, including the image above, borrowed from the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University in Michigan and from private owners. Head to the opening reception on Thursday, which ends with a one-woman performance of "Harriet Tubman's Dream," dramatizing the life of the Underground Railroad heroine. Warning: the exhibitions encourage discussion, but they also contain some pretty upsetting stuff. Parental discretion is advised.
