3. City's plan to raze encampment is shameful

It remains a mystery why Baltimore wishes to endanger the health and safety of people living in an encampment ("Homeless eviction plan criticized," March 5). Baltimore's "Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness" specifies an effective method to manage encampments: move the residents into permanent supportive housing without requiring them to use emergency shelters. This is the "Housing First" approach that the city adopted five years ago — and refuses to follow today.

  7. Images of the Homeless at New London's Gallery at Firehouse Square

Homelessness is one of those situations that we don't really fully understand until it happens to us or someone we know. The new exhibit at the Gallery at Firehouse Square aims to bring awareness to the issue and help the homeless in the New London area. Right Next Door: Images of the Homeless and Those Who Help Them is a display of Alex Matthiessen's photos and Elisabeth McGinn's oil paintings of homeless people they've documented over the years. The two women met as volunteers at a soup kitchen, and in the giving spirit, the gallery is also collection donations of canned food, clothing, hygiene and feminine products, underwear and socks. In addition to the physical donations, the entirety of the proceeds from the works – all of which are for sale – will go to the Homeless Hospitality Center of New London and St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich. While the exhibit itself opened for view on March 10, the opening reception happens this Saturday, March 16, from 2-6 p.m., where you can meet the artists, view a video documentary produced by students at East Lyme High School, and participate in a silent auction.

  9. City clears homeless camp, residents in temporary housing

Tracy Jones pounded a pair of sneakers against the wall of an Interstate 83 ramp, shaking off months of caked-on dirt. She tossed aside a long-sleeve shirt that had been chewed by a rat and packed up her few belongings Friday as a team of city workers razed the homeless encampment where she had lived with more than a dozen others.

  11. Tom Coburn's campaign against government waste

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma is a real-life Murray Blum. Blum, played by Charles Grodin, is the president's accountant in the comedy "Dave," which I think of every time we have one of these spending dramas in Washington. In my favorite scene...

  23. Bill Rosendahl, happy warrior

Robert Kennedy was a young Bill Rosendahl's hope for the White House, but Kennedy's rival, Hubert Humphrey, practiced the "happy warrior" style of politics that represents the principles Rosendahl has embraced. As he leaves the Los Angeles City Council after two terms, his eight years in office (and a diagnosis of cancer, now in remission) have not extinguished Rosendahl's cheerfulness, but they have given his warrior side an instruction booklet.
