  1. 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' a luxe example of '50s cinema

The teaming of Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" was a combination so potent it can only be described with an inappropriately long wolf whistle, so much so that even a fussbudget such as New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther couldn't resist devoting a few lines in his 1953 review to the pair's physical attributes. He actually backdoors his way into the observation, couching it in a line of dialogue from the film ("Those girls couldn't drown!") before arriving at the conclusion that "there is not much class in this picture." It seems you can't have your cheesecake and eat it too.

  7. Adler throws a celestial ball

The Women's Board of the Adler Planetarium held its annual Celestial Ball Sept. 8. On this clear, star-filled night, more than 650 black-tie-clad patrons enjoyed dramatic views of the skyline and Lake Michigan from the planetarium's terrace. As Sway Chicago's orchestra played, partygoers perused a silent auction that included a silver Labrador puppy, a $10,000 gift certificate to Graff Jewelers, exotic trips, plus several space-themed items. A highlight was an Apollo XIII patch signed by Apollo and Gemini astronaut Capt. James Lovell (honorary chair), who was in attendance with wife Marilyn. Guests delighted in having photos taken against backdrops of Venus and the Milky Way.
