  1. Here's one prediction you can take to the bank: In 2016, Focus on the Family will still be spewing paranoid nonsense

    Change of Subject
In advance of the 2008 election, Focus on the Family released "Letter from 2012 in Obama’s America," warning their followers what life would be like in the fall of 2012 were Barack Obama to be elected. It's both frightening and......

  3. Albert G. Salter: Jefferson's own words on religion

  5. Shavout: The Story of Now

I attended a lovely Bat Mitzvah service this past Saturday, which is always a momentous occasion, but particularly so in our small synagogue. The Bat Mitzvah girl read one of my favorite readings from the new Reform prayer book Mishkan T'filah, "Why Am...

  7. Where are we, now? Alas, just east of Eden

Genesis, the first book encountered in the Bible, contains two stories of creation. One begins with formations of earth, sky, etc. and ends with the captivating revelation of Adam who lived only after God breathed the breath of life into him. His ultimate partner, Eve, was created later and Adam’s rib was used to form her skeletal structure that matched his. The other version begins with the formation of both Adam and Eve and then proceeds to develop the creation of the universe while leaving out creation aspects contained in the other.

  17. Do we understand what Jesus said?

"Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth." This passage of Scripture from Matthew gave me some trouble. Why should the meek inherit the earth? These are not the shakers and the doers of the world. As I read this passage again I thought of...

  19. SIMPLY THE BIBLE: Grow by reading and learning

The Gospel of John is unique. The Apostle John wrote this one-of-a-kind Gospel. Each of the Gospels was written with a specific group of people in mind. The Gospel of Matthew was written for the Jews, calling Jesus the King of the Jews, and it referenced the Old Testament Scriptures more than 100 times. The Gospel of Mark is what I like to call, “a hurry-up Gospel.” Believed to be written for the Romans, Mark writes the word “immediately” 37 times. The Gospel of Luke, a very detailed Gospel, is believed to be written to the Greeks.
