  1. 5 new coffee shops

When a caffeine craving sneaks up, you don't have to venture far to find your fix, whether at a boutique roaster such as Metropolis or Intelligentsia or the drive-thru at Dunkin Donuts. Lucky for serious coffee fans, the past four months have brought five new options for fueling up. The latest crop of coffee shops are setting themselves apart by shipping in rare beans, roasting beans right on-site and even concocting their own syrups for flavored lattes.

  5. Lady Gaga sightings in Chicago -- lots of restaurant visits but, curiously, not a lot of clubs

What do Chicago restaurants Spiaggia, Table Fifty-Two, Girl and the Goat and Topolobampo have in common? They all feature former “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters” contestants in their kitchens. And, not coincidentally, they’ve all been visited by Lady Gaga this year.

  17. Bar Toma: Italian fare inspires dreams of summertime dining

<a class=&quot;runtimeTopic" href="#">Tony Mantuano</a> is on a roll. A local politician who flies on Air Force One these days calls him "my favorite chef." He's in the running &mdash; again &mdash; for the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Chef award. His executive chef at Spiaggia, Sarah Grueneberg, came thisclose to winning Top Chef a week ago. His star power is such that last year Levy Restaurants happily blew up their venerable Bistro 110 (which probably needed overhauling) to let Mantuano create Bar Toma (as in TOny MAntuano), a casual-yet-urbane food and wine bar that seems to be a physical incarnation of "Wine Bar Food," the appetizer and wine book Mantuano wrote with his wife, Cathy.

  21. Ice cream -- It's what's for winter

Defying the notion that ice cream is a treat best left to the long, hot days of summer, chefs are creating frozen desserts in flavors that are synonymous with the short, dark days of winter. Here is a sampling of such desserts to be enjoyed now &#8212; indoors, of course, where the thermostat keeps things comfy.
