1. Question on Catholicism, abortion, makes for dramatic moments in VP debate

It was the first-ever debate between two Roman Catholics vying for a White House perch, and in Thursday's face-off between Vice President Joe Biden and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan, the question was put plainly: How does your faith shape your position on abortion?

  3. Columnist Cal Thomas: Truth, God and Jerusalem

In a speech resembling a TV re-run (the liberal website The Daily Beast called it "dull"), President Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination for a second term. In doing so, he made the most ludicrous claim of this campaign, indeed, of his...

  5. 'CBS This Morning' the thinking person's way to start the TV day

I have been meaning to write a big piece about CBS News and "This Morning" for two weeks. But other assignments took precedence, so now I'll have to write a much smaller piece a day late after the network has already celebrated 100 days of its revamped and journalistically-amped 'Early Show' with Charlie Rose and Gayle King.

  7. In Theory: Can the Catholic Church restore its image?

The image ofthe Catholic Church recently was further battered when documents revealed that Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York authorized payments of up to $20,000 each to priests accused of sexual abuse as “motivation” not to contest being defrocked.

  11. For U.S. bishops, economic justice isn't on the agenda

At a time of staggering poverty, rampant unemployment and growing income inequality, Catholic bishops will gather for a national meeting in Baltimore today and remain largely silent about these profound moral issues. A recent Catholic News Service headline about the meeting — "Bishops' agenda more devoted to internal matters than societal ills" — is a disappointing snapshot for a church that has long been a powerful voice for economic justice.

  17. Cardinal Dolan Sues 3 Obama Cabinet Members

The Archdiocese of New York, joined by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, filed a federal lawsuit Monday against three Cabinet officials in the Obama administration.
It was the first, legal salvo in the feud over insurance funding for birth control--which could soon be a mandate, even for Catholic health care agencies and universities. "I appreciated meeting the President; there's a lot I admire about him," Timothy Cardinal Dolan told PIX 11, after the suit was filed in the Eastern District of New York. "But we weren't making progress."
