Michael Pfleger

A Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Michael Pfleger is pastor of St. Sabina Church in Chicago, the largest African-American Catholic church in the city's Archdiocese. Pfleger, a blond, blue-eyed firebrand priest who has led his black South Side parish since 1983, gained national attention for his brash activism and rebellion against church superiors. Since his ordination in 1975, Pfleger has clashed with every Chicago archbishop from Cardinal John Cody to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin to Cardinal Francis George. Since his ordination in 1975, Pfleger has clashed with every Chicago archbishop from Cardinal John Cody to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin to Cardinal Francis George. He confronted drug dealers, defaced alcohol and cigarette billboards in black neighborhoods, denounced talk-show host Jerry Springer and was arrested more than 40 times. In a move that angered church officials, Pfleger adopted three foster children Lamar, Beronti and Jarvis. He defended the adoption by saying that fatherhood made him a better priest. In 1998, one of his sons, 17-year-old Jarvis, was fatally shot. In 2002, Pfleger entered a public standoff with Cardinal George when he protested church rules that limit pastors tenure at each parish. Despite the disagreement, Pfleger remained at St. Sabina. Pfleger said he was inspired to become a priest by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Born on May 22, 1949, Pfleger was 16 when he witnessed the 1966 confrontation in Marquette Park where King was struck by a rock. "It was the greatest, most powerful class in non-violence I'll ever get in my life," Pfleger said.  « Show less
