13. The Gold Standard: Bet a penny on Day-Lewis as Lincoln?

"I am 10 years older than I was a year ago." We believe that's a line Abraham Lincoln said to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at the end of "Lincoln." Or it could be something "Lincoln" lead Daniel Day-Lewis wearily muttered during one of the endless Q&As he's done during a long campaign of an altogether different sort than the one fought for the Union. What can we say? The lines are blurring at this point, though we're still fairly confident that the great Day-Lewis will put his own stamp on history next month, becoming the first actor to win three Oscars for a lead performance. An early snapshot of the four acting races:

  15. The Civil War: Fort Henry and Fort Donelson

    The North strikes back.
After the debacle at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, the Union needed a decisive victory. It had to wait awhile, but the two-part victory finally came Feb. 6 at Fort Henry on the Tennessee River and on Feb. 16 just a few miles east at Fort Donelson. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant earned his nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant at the battle at Fort Donelson. Illinois troops saw action in both conflicts.

  21. Karen Russell explains 'The Barn at the End of Our Term'

Singling out a Karen Russell story for being strange is a bit like acknowledging a raindrop for being wet. Beginning with her debut 2006 collection, “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” Russell has presented an expanding universe of fiction that is so cracked, so twisted and so brilliantly described that when readers encounter her new book, “Vampires in the Lemon Grove,” they will have no choice but to give in to the urge to ask one of the most-cliched questions known to writer and reader alike: “How the hell did she come up with that?”
