  1. Laura Neuman bets on herself again, this time as Anne Arundel county executive

When she entered the race to replace John R. Leopold as county executive, Laura Neuman had a far higher profile in business than she did in politics. Many of the other 15 candidates were better known. But the County Council pulled a surprise, granting her the seat in a 4-3 vote.

  5. With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?

  13. Can anybody save the Republican Party?

The year 2012 was a disaster for the Republican Party. They failed to regain control of the U.S. Senate. They lost eight seats in the House of Representatives. They didn't just lose the White House to Barack Obama, they got clobbered: losing the Electoral College, 332 to 206, and losing the popular vote by almost 5 million. They've lost the popular vote in five of the last six elections.

  15. GOP in need of a reboot?

Will Republican leaders listen to a bruising new internal report that calls for more minority outreach? First, they have to persuade their party's right-wingers to avoid making younger and nonwhite voters feel about as welcome as a cheeseburger at a vegan buffet.

  19. Republican reality check beginning with Priebus

Some Republicans haven't gotten to the first step: the one where you admit there's a problem. In a roundup of reactions to the 2012 U.S. presidential election by the magazine Commentary, for example, conservative writer Wilfred McClay says Republican worriers are "wildly overwrought" because the 2012 election was "close."
