  5. Correctional officers' rights must be upheld

The recent indictments of more than a dozen Maryland correctional officers on charges of corruption are deeply troubling. It is important to note, however, that more than 7,500 officers across Maryland perform a necessary job in a very dangerous environment every day. And the vast majority perform their tough duties with the utmost professionalism.

The first words of Elvis Presley's classic hit, "Jailhouse Rock," were: "The warden threw a party at the county jail." In Maryland, the entire prison system is having a party thrown by gangs and official mismanagement ("Assembly leaders to be briefed on jail problems," May 4).

  15. Complaining CEOs need to take a hike

I took a walk early Wednesday morning. Azaleas and dogwoods were in bloom. Green-again trees and shrubs were damp, dripping from Tuesday's rain. A zillion birds were singing, and even the starlings sounded sweet. The Orioles had won another game. A horse with a Maryland owner had won the Kentucky Derby.

  21. Let's not jump to conclusions over who to blame for the city jail scandal

As I assessed the situation at the Baltimore City jail, and the subsequent indictments that came down because of the corruption of a few, I realized that while the rosy portrait painted by Gov. Martin O'Malley may not have been as bright as he would have liked the public to believe, it certainly was nowhere near as gloomy as your recent editorial portrayed it ("O'Malley can't spin his way out of the jail scandal," April 30).
