1. What will Pat Toomey's role be in 2012 politics?

He lacks the celebrity of Sarah Palin or the political stature of Chris Christie, but an endorsement from Pat Toomey would be measured within Republican ranks as a coup for many candidates.

  17. Voting against the next war

The single most disturbing thing about the Republican debate in Iowa last week was the near-obsession among the candidates for a war with Iran. Only two, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman, appear to be immune to what the remaining candidates believe to be a litmus test for their qualifications to be commander-in-chief, and each tried to outdo the others explaining how many cans of whup-ass they were willing to open up on Iran. In primaries past, candidates had to show their pro-life credentials to be a contender, now its the willingness to commit the country to another bloody, pointless war.

  21. Iowa, 2011: Here they come a-courting

In Iowan Meredith Willson's "The Music Man," Marian, the River City librarian, spends a lot of time looking for love, while pretending not to. In the end she does, in fact, find it, with a huckster — a man who may be slightly less than sincere. We naturally, and naively, assume it all works out for her, that her choice was sound, that her life will be perfect.

  23. On North Korea, caution is better than rash words

Perhaps there has been nothing more baffling to American eyes than the photographs of hordes of obviously grief-stricken North Koreans mourning the death of their 69-year-old dictator, Kim Jong Il. Under his reign and that of his father, the people of the globe's most closed society have remained mired in repression and poverty for 63 years.
