1. Sens. Ted Cruz and Dianne Feinstein face off on gun control

Freshman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), a tea party darling, evidently is so proud of his exchange with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) during the Senate Judiciary Committee's session Thursday, he posted a <a href="http://youtu.be/yCehCjuB7AM">video of it on YouTube. At issue was the constitutionality of S 150, Feinstein's proposal to ban semiautomatic assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.

5. 4 million assault weapons in America: That should be enough

Let’s just be clear: No regular American needs an assault weapon for home defense.
Let’s just be clear: No regular American needs an assault weapon for home defense. So why is there so much resistance on this? On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved a ban -- introduced by California Democrat Dianne Feinstein -- on...

WASHINGTON -- A sudden debate over the potential use of unmanned drones against terrorist suspects in the United States touched off a power struggle within the Republican Party on Thursday, even as the Senate confirmed President Obama’s CIA...

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Max Baucus has been here before. Back during the Clinton era, the Democrat faced a choice: support an assault weapons ban urged by a president from his own party and risk angering constituents who cherish their gun...

13. Terrorism and the war at home

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) waged a 13-hour filibuster on the Senate floor this week in a futile effort to set clear limits on the administration's use of covert military force. Specifically, Paul wanted the administration to concede that it couldn't legally assassinate Americans on U.S. soil. The idea that a president would approve a drone strike on a citizen sitting at a cafe in Boston or San Francisco or Wichita seems far-fetched, but even the least paranoid among us can't help but be troubled by the administration's less-than-definitive assurances.

17. Bill Rosendahl, happy warrior

Robert Kennedy was a young Bill Rosendahl's hope for the White House, but Kennedy's rival, Hubert Humphrey, practiced the "happy warrior" style of politics that represents the principles Rosendahl has embraced. As he leaves the Los Angeles City Council after two terms, his eight years in office (and a diagnosis of cancer, now in remission) have not extinguished Rosendahl's cheerfulness, but they have given his warrior side an instruction booklet.

23. A grieving father's plea

WASHINGTON -- Most of our top elected officials probably didn't notice -- they were too busy making fools of themselves over an idiotic budget "crisis" of their own manufacture -- but something worth remembering happened in Washington this week: A grieving parent pleaded softly for a ban on military-style weapons like the one used to kill his son.
