1. Jersey Governor Weeps After Meeting Springsteen

<span style="font-size: small;">In yet another case of politics making strange bedfellows, Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the man who delivered the keynote address for Mitt Romney at the Republican National Convention, was driven to tears after meeting and hugging his lifelong hero, Bruce Springsteen, an ardent supporter of President Barack Obama and a sometime critic of Christie. Of course what brought these two together was the common goal of helping their fellow New Jersey residents struggling to rebuild in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Gov. Christie told a group of volunteers “that the hug was great and that when we got home there was a lot of weeping because of the hug.”

Abel Maldonado was a young Latino rancher and fresh-faced state lawmaker when he addressed the Republican National Convention in 2000 and was hailed as the GOP's future. Nine years later, he parlayed his deciding vote on tax increases into an appointment as lieutenant governor, albeit for a brief stay.

  7. Boston Bombing Focuses Public On Surveillance

Video played a strong role in finding the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, but it was mostly old-style detecting that appeared to do the trick as the FBI and police pored through hours of clips collected on bystanders' phones, then put it out for crowd-sourcing help.

  19. My favorite moments of 2012

Years ago when I was a student at Northwestern University, a handful of executives at America Online came to my class and explained that you, I and everyone we know would soon find ourselves pleasantly stranded on "information islands." We nodded, though we didn't entirely understand. What they meant was that broadcasting would soon end and nichecasting would take over. Your island would become a mirror of yourself, what you knew, liked and watched, and you would rarely have the incentive to venture off of your narrowly prescribed landmass.
