  1. 'Next Iron Chef' recap: Culinary giant Elizabeth Falkner goes home

All the fun and games came to an abrupt stop on Sunday night's episode of "Next Iron Chef." Host Alton Brown's comical garb and the show's dependable, cheese-ball sound effects weren't enough to cut the tension when Elizabeth Falkner -- arguably the show's fiercest competitor -- was sent home.

  3. Recipe: Lemony moons and stars

I adapted my favorite shortbread recipe to honor one of my guests who wrote the children's picture book "Under the Lemon Moon." I used round and star-shaped cookie cutters to make this rich, über-lemony cookie. — Carol Eblen, Encinitas PHOTOS:...

  9. From the harvest: Strawberry tart

The strawberries you find at area you-pick farms and farmers' markets bear no resemblance to that waxy fruit from the mega mart. They are smaller, uglier, and richer in color and flavor. They taste like a strawberry should taste. They are best if eaten immediately, paired with fresh whipped cream (my favorite way to eat them), but if you need to store them in the fridge, just place them in a plastic bag with a paper towel. Their flavor will change, but they will keep better than being out all night on the counter.

  13. Drawing the chance card

Storm prep calls for action: Lug in the herbs, latch the windows, charge the phone. It calls for supplies: candles, batteries, butter and eggs. It calls for bright fire, cold cookie dough, Monopoly.

  21. Across the Table: Cooks' mad dash

Don't ask me how it happened. I can't tell you. But certainly these elements came into play: planning too far ahead, not writing things down, friends finally getting back to us with the one possible date they could come for dinner in months, visitors in town for just one night.
