11. Film review: 'Playing for Keeps' should be lost

It is clear from its opening weekend that "Playing for Keeps" is one of the biggest bombs of the year, both critically and commercially. Review database Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 2-percent "Fresh" rating for its one positive review vs. 59 negative ones (and Leonard Maltin gives it only faint praise in his "positive" review). It has also flopped at the box office, opening in sixth place on a weekend when the top five films have all been out for at least three weeks.

  15. Lyric's kid-friendly 'Pasquale' delights grownups too

"Don Pasquale" isn't exactly the first show that springs to mind when you're looking for an opera to hook young children on opera. Look a little closer, however, and you realize Donizetti's tuneful score is very kid-friendly. And what sitcom-weaned child isn't prepared to giggle whenever grownups behave foolishly?

I've got two reasons to watch my weight over the next several weeks. First, it's the holiday season, when the national sport is overeating. Second, I've got another knee replacement coming up soon, and the lighter I am going in, the easier the recovery will be.
