5. Destination Cocktail: Horchata Colada

Sometimes a cocktail is as good as a meal. That's certainly the case with a big, bold summer drink called the Horchata Colada. Created by Paul Sofsky for the new Mexican restaurant El Corazon de Costa Mesa at the Triangle in Costa Mesa, the concoction serves up gooey pineapple chunks in a creamy base of smooth coconut rum, tangy lime and spiced horchata rice milk. The rim of the glass is an experiment in layering with crushed pretzels clinging to a sticky layer of sweet caramel sauce.

  13. Lemons, twisted

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade, or so the adage goes. The clever tippler knows to take that pragmatic advice one step further: Give those lemons a twist — be it a clever garnish, an unexpected flavor pairing or, even, a bright shot of alcohol. Try these festive drinks and life will seem a whole lot easier pretty quickly.

  19. Bartenders experiment with exotic ice cubes

At a high-end cocktail bar, everything from glassware to garnishes adds extra detail to your drinks. It's no surprise, then, that ice is the next frontier. <a href="http://chicago.metromix.com/venues/mmxchi-the-aviary-venue" target="_blank">The Aviary blew minds when it opened in 2011 with its alcohol-filled ice orbs, and now bartenders across the city are pushing the limits of what can be frozen into water. But these stunners are more than just a pretty embellishment: Flavored ice adds new tastes and aromas to cocktails as the cubes melt, making the last sip of your drink quite different than the first. Just looking to cool down on a hot patio? Of course, they'll take care of that, too.

  21. Crime writer Connelly to talk at Museum of Art

Michael Connelly's novels about LAPD detective Harry Bosch have made him one of the top contemporary mystery writers, and a staple of the best-sellers list. More than 20 years after Connelly's 1992 award-wining debut "The Black Echo," he is still discovering new layers to this now iconic character. His plots, too, are increasingly complex and believable, as he showed in his latest novel, "The Black Box." Connelly has written 25 novels, 19 of them about Bosch.
