  1. New on the scene: Logan Square

Over the past few years, Logan Square has become more and more of a magnet for bar and restaurant owners looking to set up shop—and a flurry of new openings this fall and winter have only cemented this status. Here's a close-up look at one recent addition, plus quick tastes of six others.

  3. Good things come from small Liv2Eat

Baltimore has a shortage of good, small restaurants, the kind with 20 or 30 seats, where diners can have some intimacy. Restaurants, at least the ones I've been reviewing, have been getting bigger, brassier, louder. I'm not complaining. I've been having...

  5. Dining review: Galleria's colorful eatery is pho fun

Everything about 9021Pho, Glendale Galleria's newest restaurant, is lively and uplifting. Walls of windows let in light, retro-modern decor is steeped in the colors of mango and raspberry sorbet, and plates of colorful, farm-fresh foods all serve to energize weary mall shoppers. But don't feel like you have to be a weary mall shopper to come here. It's that good.

  7. Damiano: A big night in Boca

    <img src=&quot;http://interactive.sun-sentinel.com/images/restaurantstars/3stars.gif" alt="" />
If you're looking for an intimate spot for a romantic dinner or a place to talk business, Damiano probably isn't for you. It's a 225-seat restaurant that somehow seems even larger on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, when there's a guy in the bar singing...

  9. Column: It doesn't quite taste the same

This time of year, we think about foods made by people who are no longer with us.  No matter how hard we try, we can't duplicate the wonderful delicacies made by mothers and grandmothers.  Mardell Weisenburger, who grew up near Leola, misses the...

  11. Homemade pasta sauce

Call me paranoid, but I have this creepy feeling that I may need to go into hiding. You see, once all of you realize how easy it is to make a simple pasta sauce, and how you've been wasting you're hard-earned money all these years buying that packaged stuff, you may never buy a jar of pre-made sauce again.

  13. From New York chef Sara Jenkins: New Italian Pantry app

I was excited to see that New York chef Sara Jenkins of <a href=&quot;http://porsena.com/">Porsena</a> and <a href="http://www.porchettanyc.com/">Porchetta</a> has just come out with her own app called &ldquo;<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sara-jenkins-new-italian-pantry/id584348468?mt=8">New Italian Pantry</a>.&rdquo; It seems like such a natural subject and the publisher has produced a beautiful app with gorgeous photography and graphics. Too bad the content re the pantry is so sketchy. You do get some 80 recipes, though.

  15. The California Cook: Basic dishes a couple can build on

Meghan and Carter are getting married. Like so many friends of my daughter, they are bright, funny and, sometimes, almost preternaturally serious. A couple of weeks ago, they asked my wife if we would talk to them about how to stay married &mdash; and about how to cook.

  17. Mashed Squash For A Creamy Noodle Dish

We like the flavor and versatility of all kinds of winter squash. At the least, supermarkets keep ample supplies of butternut and acorn squash throughout the winter, but other varieties turn up from time to time. Gardeners who plucked these hard-skinned vegetables from the vines at the end of the growing season have their own stash for the winter, hopefully stored in a cool spot.

  23. Maccheroni Republic breaks new ground downtown

It was almost 25 years ago that Jean Louis DeMori and Antonio Tomassi opened an unprepossessing little Italian restaurant on a strip of no-man&rsquo;s land across from Cedars-Sinai Hospital. It was called Locanda Veneta and it kicked off the first round of terrific, small, very specific Italian restaurants in Southern California.
