3. The Review: Black Hogg is a beguiling entry on Silver Lake scene

First of all, Black Hogg, the name of the new Silver Lake gastropub, doesn't refer to a heritage pig or even a plain old hog or wild boar. According to the staff, it takes its name from the alternative definition of hogg, which the Oxford English Dictionary says refers to a young sheep, especially "one from the time it ceases to be a lamb until its first shearing"). And there that hogg is, ambiguous in neon outline at the very top of the restaurant's understated sign. A subliminal suggestion to order the buttery lamb burger?

5. Flying high on a new day

The question for me is whether Blackbird is a four-star restaurant with three-star amenities, or a three-star restaurant with four-star cuisine.
The question for me is whether Blackbird is a four-star restaurant with three-star amenities, or a three-star restaurant with four-star cuisine. For though the food at this 14-year-old restaurant is exemplary (more on that in a moment), there are aspects...

7. France's oyster trail

Cancale and Locmariaquer are dots on the Atlantic coast of France. Also places that produce my favorite food: Brittany oysters. Served raw on the half shell, with no more sauce than a squeeze of lemon, they are generally smaller than other varieties but intensely flavored, more precious than pearls to people who know their oysters.

9. Star potential shines at Aria

I've been meaning to review Beverly Kim's food ever since September's Chicago Gourmet. I was mightily impressed with her contribution to the food festival: a seafood panna cotta topped with mango gelee and a pair of chilled mussels.

19. Peruvian 101

Like any proud Peruvian (well, halvsies), I can't get through a conversation about the country without waxing nostalgic about my favorite foods: conchitas a la parmesana (scallops baked in Parmesan cheese), lenguado con mantequilla negra y alcaparras (sole sauteed in black butter with capers), ceviche de pescado (chunks of fresh fish "cooked" in the acid of key limes) — all eaten, preferably, beach-side while getting drowsy on pisco sours.

21. Review: St. Tropez in Boca Raton
