1. Restaurant review: Thai Avenue serves up a taste extravaganza

For a small eatery, Thai Avenue Restaurant serves up some mighty big flavor. The fare is clearly fresh and freshly made — no wonder the flavors are so bold.

  3. The joy of soup

It's cold. We can empathize. This is the dead of winter, where the only warmth is the mere knowledge that pitchers and catchers have already reported. But the prospect of spring isn't enough to keep us from shivering through the next few months. We need something warm and comforting, like a wool blanket but edible.

  5. Cook easy seafood dinners for Lent

PARIS — Living in France has meant that my once passing fancy for all things that swim has exploded into a very big love. From picking out the tiniest of bulots (sea snails) with needlelike tools and cracking open the claws of a fresh-caught homard (lobster) to learning that the best way to enjoy raie (skate) is with a simple lemon, butter and caper sauce, I have fallen hard. I find myself visiting the poissonnieres more often than I do the butcher, because I’ve learned that fish — which I once believed was a tricky thing to cook — is one of the easiest and healthiest dinners you can make.

  7. Recoating crumbling basement walls

Q: Our 1920s Colonial has a stone foundation with some sort of cement coating on the interior. Much of the coating has flaked off, exposing the mortar joints, which are disintegrating.

The silhouettes vary from clingy to fit-and-flair to high-low hemlines, but one element is consistent across the racks at Celestial Brides in Johnstown — everything has shimmer and sparkle.

  11. Great Baltimore cocktails, the Spicy Orange Caipriņa at Joe Squared

Well folks, spring is officially upon us and it's time to start wetting our whistles with some light, fun, refreshing drinks that are more conducive to outdoor frolicking than hermiting next to an open hearth or space heater.

  15. Spice up ground beef with Asian kick

I don’t much like cooking with ground meat. It’s supereasy, of course. Just toss in the skillet and brown, then proceed with spices, sauces, chopped vegetables, etc. But for a weeknight supper, I’d rather saute some chicken or cook pasta. Faced with a pound of ground beef or chicken, I’d prefer to make meatballs or meatloaf, but either takes too long.

  19. Restaurant review: Griddle 145 sizzles in Whitehall

Whitehall’s Griddle 145 serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but the name, which brings pancakes to mind, suggests a good time to visit might be that all-important first meal of the day. Indeed, I discovered, it was.
