  1. Unexpected restaurants for Valentine's Day

    Dining@Large
I've been putting it off, but really the time has come to settle on a Valentine's Day Top 10 topic. After all, eating out is a Valentine's tradition these days. (I don't think it used to be.) And if I'm going......

  3. Shan pairs grocer, dining with its Indo-Pakistani fare

    Tribune staff reporter
First impressions: To get to the dining room of Shan Restaurant, one must first walk through Shan's convenience store, a crowded space alive with people shopping, eating and chatting with neighbors. The dining room, created when Shan expanded a few months...

  5. Ethiopia flavors Blue Nile fare

    Tribune staff reporter
First impressions: It's easy to pass up Blue Nile, an unassuming little storefront located in a strip mall. In fact a dining mate did just that three times before he found us. But once inside the restaurant, the simple tables, bright yellow walls and...

  7. Holiday menu of discovery

You can't cook just anything for Rosh Hashana. There are rules to follow, traditions to uphold. And I wasn't familiar with any of them: I grew up in Tornado Alley, in a Quaker boarding school in northern Iowa. But here I was, in Southern California, setting about to prepare a Rosh Hashana dinner for my Jewish boyfriend. What to cook became a theology lesson as well as a culinary one.

  11. Drago Centro in downtown L.A.

Seriously, what is wrong with this town? If Celestino Drago, one of the best-known Italian restaurateurs in Southern California, can't get a crowd for his most ambitious restaurant yet, and a very glamorous one at that, then what? The fact that <a href=&quot;http://theguide.latimes.com/restaurants/drago-centro-venue">Drago Centro's</a> location -- downtown L.A. -- may be outside the comfort zone of his fan base shouldn't be a deterrent for more intrepid Italophiles.

  15. Harissa, mon amour

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
This is an ode to harissa. It's replaced my ketchup, my salsa picante, even (gasp) my Louisiana hot sauce. I put it on everything. Well, not exactly everything, but the potent North African chile sauce goes into my bean soups and sandwiches, it spikes...

  17. Bastide, in a class of its own

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
THE blue door, shuttered for more than a year and a half, is open once again, and the stage is set for Act 3. Step in, and you're welcomed with the offer of an aperitif in the enchanting garden where a pair of gnarly olive trees cast lacy shadows on the...

  19. Hotel Bel-Air Restaurant: Date with a grande dame

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
ONE warm October evening, you're sitting outside with friends under trellises trained with bougainvillea, about to begin dinner on the terrace of one of the most glamorous hotels in the world. The wine's magnificent, the china's gorgeous. A plate of...

  23. Fine food at hip Eden's Lounge

Eden's Lounge is much better known as a nightclub, lounge and all-around posh gathering spot than as a restaurant. In a city where sexy, upscale clubs seem to come and go, Eden's Lounge has maintained. It's an especially beautiful club, too, making wonderful use of an old building's good bones (the Eager House used to be here) with an interlocking series of sumptuously exotic rooms, each offering different levels of cushiness and comfort. It's a club worth dressing up for, and on its Web site, Eden's Lounge tells its customers they had better do just that - &quot;sophisticated and stylish dress a must."
