  7. Top Ten 'Am I Missing Something?' Foods

    Dining@Large
At the risk of looking like a rube, I'll admit it: I don’t get why truffles are such a big whoop.I’d like to think it’s a case of truffle tastes, portobello budget. I’ve hardly had the chance to sample the......

  9. Fruit, vegetables meld in fresh, salsa-like dip

This fresh, flavorful recipe is easy to make — if you are quick with a knife. I suggest using a very sharp knife, not trying to use a food processor or chopper because you run the risk of creating watermelon soup. Simply take a large slice out of a...

  11. Rise and shine

The early mom gets a quiet cup of coffee. Which should be reward enough, but it isn't. I usually succumb to the snooze button.
The early mom gets a quiet cup of coffee. Which should be reward enough, but it isn't. I usually succumb to the snooze button. Still, I'm impressed by early. The friend who wakes predawn to work. Or worse, work out. The quick-study who files early. Or...

  13. Taste of Morocco

Morocco dropped by. I wasn't expecting a North African kingdom, but company is always welcome. Especially such charming company — those cinnamon-warm spices, those lush stews and that habit of pressing savory against sweet. Intoxicating.

  15. Rare treats

Rodrick Markus reached for the top shelf of a metal cabinet at the back of his office. "I know, I know, I know," he said to himself. His fingers worked across a row of jars and stopped at a tall glass cylinder. I had asked him about rare ingredients. Rare ingredients is about 40 percent of what he does. He locates tough-to-acquire things for chefs who, being chefs, want something especially bad when they are told it will be impossible to get. Rare vegetables, salts, oils, spices, nuts, fish eggs — he finds the guy who locates the guy who heard of the guy who knows the guy who knows about, say, a place in the Pacific Northwest where, with the right permit at the right time, you can forage for a rare pine bark that grows 25 feet in the air.

<a class=&quot;runtimeTopic" href="#">Takashi</a> Yagihashi, a fine-dining chef if ever there were one, is adjusting to life as a casual-restaurant owner. It probably helps that his new spot, Slurping Turtle, has been a runaway hit since its doors opened in late November.

  19. Oleanders hardy but need help shedding caterpillars

    Q. An oleander bush was given to me and it is being eaten by caterpillars. Is there a spray and will it freeze? A. Hopefully the caterpillars weren't part of the gift but just an attractant for the polka-dot moth. It's a pretty moth with white, red and...

  21. Sign of the times

The horoscope offers a certain charm: Gaze at the dark sky, pick out stars and see the future. Even if science insists that those specks of light have traveled from the past.
