1. Dinner tonight! Salad with Parmigiano-Reggiano and anchovy dressing

If you love a good salad, dinner doesn't get much better than this tricolore salad from Nancy Silverton. A simple yet colorful blend of nicely assertive lettuces (arugula, frisée and endive), the salad is tossed with a homemade anchovy dressing and topped with a sprinkling of freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.

  3. Dinner tonight! Spaghetti with arugula and garlic bread crumbs

A touch of fresh-toasted bread crumbs can literally transform a dish, whether sprinkling them over vegetables or gratins, they even work magic drizzled over desserts. And they can elevate a simple pasta dish, too, as Food editor Russ Parsons shows in this amazing (and simple) recipe for <a href="http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-calcook-breadcrumbs-recipe3-20110519,0,6666353.story" target="_blank">spaghetti with arugula and garlic bread crumbs.

  7. Counter Intelligence: A little taste of Cortez

What you think about Cortez is going to depend in large part on what you think about crowds, and noise, and screechy jazz, about well-meaning servers who are slightly impatient with the idea of service, and about spending most of an hour leaning up against a shoe box-narrow windowsill waiting for a seat to open up.

  11. Homage to fromage

My theory works: Surround myself with friends, good food and wine on New Year's Eve, and the future's so bright I gotta wear shades.

  19. Crispy, colorful eggplant towers that need no frying

I love the taste of fried eggplant in recipes, but I don't like what the usual ingredients — oil for frying and eggs with cholesterol — can do to my body. So I experimented until I discovered a way for breadcrumbs to stick to the eggplant — resulting in a crunchy outside and a soft, moist inside — without using egg and without frying the slices.

  23. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up — for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.
