    North Branford High School
This fall, people of all ages gathered in Middlefield at Lyman Orchards. Families enjoyed activities like apple picking, pumpkin picking, pony rides, and fresh apple pie at the food market. However, everyone's focus seemed to be on the...

  5. Lana Parrilla: An evil queen and a Brooklyn hippie

Lana Parrilla, who plays Regina Mills/the Evil Queen on ABC's &quot;Once Upon a Time," doesn't look very menacing as she reaches over to help with the French press coffee carafe on a recent trip to a Hollywood cafe. There's definitely a softer side to the sometimes vengeful monarch, and to the Puerto Rican/Sicilian actress who inhabits the fairy tale role.

  7. Use surplus fruit in coffee cake

<strong>Q: About two years ago, I wrote to the food editor of the Sun Sentinel and said I had a dilemma. All my mangoes ripened at the same time and, to solve my problem, I made mango freezes with them. Your paper was good enough to print my letter and recipe. Now, I have the same problem and, being tired of mango freezes, I now make a mango coffee cake. Is anyone interested? &mdash; Dr. Saul Kahn, <a href=&quot;http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/bocaraton?track=tax-bocaraton">Boca Raton</a></strong>

  9. Test Kitchen tips: Rolling out pie and cookie dough

To keep the dough even while rolling out your pie crusts and cut cookies, work the rolling pin in the center of the dough and don't roll all the way to the edges. You'll have greater control over the thickness of the dough if you keep the pin toward the center of the dough -- the closer you get to the rim, the more likely you are to roll the pin off the edges, flattening them and making the dough uneven. Rotate the dough a quarter-turn each time you roll to make sure the thickness remains even.

  19. Deck the halls with vegetarian roasts!

When I was a diehard vegetarian a number of years ago, packaged meat alternatives were slim pickings at best. Sure, you could find the occasional veggie &quot;burger" or "hot dog," but there was no comparison to the real thing. Burned enough times, I grew wary of anything masquerading as meat.
